Singapore Lift Etiquette: Making Room for a Stroller

Hand holding the door-open button inside an elevator

I often encounter a small act of lift courtesy in Singapore: someone stays by the door-open button to let everyone else through. I appreciate the intention. With a stroller or bicycle, I sometimes struggle with the geometry.

Getting in is straightforward. Someone holds the button, everyone enters, and we set off.

Getting out together can be more complicated. The person nearest the panel holds the doors while the rest of us leave. But they are also standing beside the narrow opening I need to get through.

So I turn the stroller, try another angle and squeeze past, while trying to say thank you. Add shopping bags, and my three-second exit becomes a small furniture-removal exercise.

The door is open. Now I just need to work out how to fit through it.
