How We Moved to Singapore with Six Suitcases

Asia had never particularly enticed me. Thailand had meant holidays to me: heat, sea, tom yum and warm encounters. I definitely never thought that I would be living in Southeast Asia.

Here’s what happened. At some point, the company where I work offered me the chance to relocate to Singapore. We have a large office here and the company was established many years ago in Banana-Lemon. I came for a week “to look around” and I liked it. Singapore has a way of charming very quickly.

I came home and announced: 
 — Dear wife and children, I propose an adventure for all of us — to move to a distant country. You have never been there and know nothing about it. But! It’s always warm and there are swimming pools in every home. 
 — Say no more! We’re going!

The company helped me with the paperwork. It was somewhat tedious, but not difficult. In total, it took about three months (I was dragging my feet). We sent some things by regular mail, packed the rest into six suitcases and flew to live in Singapore.
