Singaporeans like strange food. Take fried carrot cake, for example. It is very popular, even though it is not a cake and contains no carrot.

It tastes a bit like soft pasta or dumplings in a pleasant, slightly sweet sauce. You can eat it on its own or as a side dish.

The dish is known locally as chai tow kway. It is made from daikon — Chinese radish — rice flour, garlic and egg. You will find it in hawker centres and food courts all over Singapore.

A very strange thing. Worth trying once, just to tick the box. But no more than that.
