One Slice of New York on Joo Chiat Road

Singapore has plenty of pizza, but I have found surprisingly few places where you can walk in, eat one slice and continue with your day.

Choice Cuts Pizza & Records on Joo Chiat Road is my exception. My children call it their favourite pizzeria, which is why I have been there often enough to stop pretending every visit is research.

The slice-shop ritual

I would not call it the greatest pizza I have ever eaten. What Choice Cuts gets exactly right is the slice-shop ritual. A large New York-style slice comes out of the display, goes back into the oven, then gets a little oil and fresh herbs. It feels like a proper order, not a leftover piece of a pie.

I like the sourdough base: crisp, chewy and worth eating in its own right. The shop describes its dough as made daily and cold-proofed for 24–48 hours.

My default is the Homie Pepperoni, S$9 a slice on my visit in September 2026. I also like MF Shroom and the occasional tandoori chicken. You can ask for creamy cheese on top. Even the menu names fit the soundtrack, but I usually end up ordering pepperoni.

Records, drinks and very large boxes

The room is carefully dressed as a slightly battered New York slice shop: worn floors, Knicks colours, a Wu-Tang scarf, a boombox, a disco ball and bins of vinyl records for sale. Hip-hop, funk and soul supply the soundtrack. The staff joke with the easy familiarity of people who assume you have been coming for years. In my case, they are right.

There are only a few tables, and weekends can be busy. You can order beer or an Aperol Spritz while you wait. Wine is also on the menu, although I rarely see anyone drinking it. I do not drink it there either, so perhaps the wine and I are equally responsible.

If one slice is not enough, the full pies are 18 inches across and started at S$42 on that visit. They come in an enormous box. Walk down Joo Chiat Road carrying one, and everyone looks at you with respect.

There is also an S$8 New York-style hot dog with sauerkraut, relish, onion sauce and mustard. I have never seen anyone order it, and I have never tried it.
